Sitting or kneeling
Sitting on the benches is the most comfortable option and perfectly fine on calm water. If you want even more stability, you can kneel: slide forward a little, kneel on the floor of the boat and lean gently against the bench. This lowers your centre of gravity and the boat sits noticeably steadier.
Kneeling is especially worth it when the wind picks up or small waves roll across the lake. For a relaxed trip in calm weather, sitting is all you need.
Keep your weight low and centred
- ●Sit upright and relaxed, don't lean back
- ●Place your feet flat on the floor of the boat, not on the rim
- ●Let your knees fall slightly outward, resting gently against the sides for extra grip
- ●Stay calm and loose, sudden movements rock the boat more than the lake ever will
Who sits where
Spread the weight evenly through the boat so it sits level in the water instead of dipping at the front or back. As a rule of thumb, the heavier or more experienced person sits toward the back and takes over steering, while the lighter person sits up front and sets the paddling rhythm.
